Villas of the Galleon isn’t just a paradise for guests—it’s also a haven for local wildlife. Recently, we spotted a Cayman Parrot (Amazona leucocephala caymanensis) enjoying a snack from the Cordia tree near Villa 54. As the national bird of the Cayman Islands, this vibrant parrot is always a joy to see.

The Cayman Parrot

The Cayman Parrot is a beloved part of the island’s wildlife, with 2 subspecies: the Grand Cayman Amazon and the smaller Cayman Brac Amazon. While both can be found in the Cayman Islands, it’s the Grand Cayman Amazon you’re most likely to spot here at Villas of the Galleon. With its vibrant green feathers accented by touches of blue and red, this endangered parrot is a true symbol of the island’s natural beauty.

Active in the early morning and late afternoon, the Cayman Parrot feeds on native plants like Sea Grapes and Red Birch. These parrots nest in tree cavities and are known for their secretive nature, often staying hidden during the day. This makes sightings all the more special. They mate for life, and their young stay in the nest for about 8 weeks before taking flight. Spotting one of these stunning birds is a rare and memorable experience, a reminder of the island’s rich and unique heritage.
