The Cayman Islands are not just known for their beaches and clear waters; they have a rich history of piracy. Before settlers arrived in the 1660s, the islands were uninhabited, with only turtles, alligators, and lizards. Early attempts to settle on Little Cayman were disrupted by pirate attacks.
In the 18th century, the Caribbean became a base for notorious pirates and privateers. They targeted ships carrying gold and silver to Europe, making the Cayman Islands a prime location for treasure hunters. Famous pirates like Blackbeard, Captain Henry Morgan, and Lowther frequented these waters. Legend says Blackbeard still has treasure hidden in the caves of Cayman Brac, a site rich in pirate lore.
The Cayman Islands Pirate Festival
Today, the legacy of these pirates lives on during the annual Cayman Islands Pirate Festival, which has been celebrated since 1977. This month-long event draws thousands of people and kicks off in George Town, Grand Cayman with an exciting mock pirate “invasion,” where pirate ships land in the harbour to “capture” the Governor. Each island takes its turn hosting festivities throughout the month, featuring parades, costume contests, street dancing, competitions, and fireworks.
